Again, We Start with What we Know

The link between pre-civilization and civilization is when the nomadic, hunter-gatherers decide on a complete, sedentary lifestyle. To better understand how they reach this point, you make like to read the Rise of Civilization.

Rise of Civilization Defined:

  • Cultivation of grain and the beginnings of animal husbandry allows for a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Homes are built to better withstand the elements, and storage buildings are needed for excess grain.
  • Agriculture by way of irrigation leads to more grain abundance.  Now, record keeping is needed.  Therefore, the first writing appears.
  • As the area grows with a surplus in goods, trade with other like "cities" begins.  More record keeping is needed.
  • More public buildings are created.  A leader is selected, and there is social stratification. Trade is underway. Writing has begun.
These are the necessities that define a civilization. We observe an urban setting.
